A wedding anniversary is a time to celebrate and honor a couple’s commitment, and to remember the day that they took their wedding vows. Whether they are celebrating their 25th anniversary or their 50th, it should represent a special time in their lives. It is also a time when far-flung relatives and friends gather once again to celebrate this momentous event.
A memorable wedding anniversary party is not hard to achieve. First, decide what type of party the couple would like. It could either be a huge and lavish celebration, an afternoon backyard barbeque, or just a simple family dinner with a few close friends and relatives. Then, make a guest list—if it’s a surprise party, borrow their address books or gather the family to make sure nobody is left out of the list.

Have a printed copy of the guest list and share it with everyone (except the anniversary couple, of course) to double-check that nobody is forgotten. Once you have an estimated number of people for the party, finding the venue is the next step. Take a look at hotels, restaurants, country clubs, halls, or maybe your house (if it’s a large one).
Some venues provide catering and entertainment services as well, which is all the more convenient for the planner. The menu should go along with the type of party that you are having. However, make an alternative one for guests having special dietary requirements (low fat, low salt, etc). Don’t forget to book the time and date of the occasion with the venue.
Now that the guest list and booking the venue is done, the next step is to buy and send out the invitations. If you are on a tight budget or want to make the invitation more personal, there are invitation kits sold online or at the local crafts store which you could assemble.
You could also print out invitation templates from the internet that you can download for free, and you can create something that matches the anniversary couple’s personality, party colors or theme. Decorations for the venue should match the party style as well. Balloons, banners and lanterns always add a lot of fun.
If the theme is quite formal, the couple’s favourite flowers are a good choice to brighten up the place along with candles and chandeliers. The couple’s pictures can also be used as part of the decor. Photos at various stages of their marriage can be framed and placed on the table, which the guests can take home as souvenirs.
Consult with the venue if they could do the decorations and draw a plan on how you want the room to look like on the day of the party. You may want to recruit some family members as volunteers to supervise with the decorating to make sure that you get what you want.
A replica of the couple’s wedding cake is a good choice for the anniversary cake. This can be an excellent table centerpiece—the couple can also repeat the whole cutting-of-the-cake and feeding-each-other ritual on their wedding day. A sit-down dinner gives the party a subdued and more formal atmosphere. A buffet, on the other hand, is more casual and encourages mingling among the guests.
Heavy appetizers and finger foods that can replace a traditional meal may be served. A band is a popular type of entertainment in parties like this, but if the couple is young-ish, a DJ is also a good choice. Be sure to book it in advance and have a written contract to avoid problems in the future.
A wedding anniversary is always a reason to celebrate for any couple. It doesn’t matter how grand or simple the party is, as long as it is a memorable one.
