Secrets To Successful Couple Communication

Tags: , ,

Some people have a knack for communication; for others, this form of expression can be a little difficult and challenging. Whatever it is, communication is one thing that a lot of people use every single day, on all parts of the globe. People have different ways of relating to one another—we all know that language does not refer to the spoken word alone, but also encompass any indirect form of communication, the most common of which is body language.

In relationships, being familiar with body language is as important as choosing the right words and knowing how to say it. A lot of couples are well aware of this, but it can’t be denied that there are still others who need to develop this crucial skill in order to keep their relationship running smoothly, like a well-oiled machine.

Every couple have their own style of communication: for some it is natural to talk to each other in an ear-splitting manner, but for others, the hushed voice can work quite well in almost any situation. Then there are the times when a couple doesn’t even have to utter a single word to get a message across to each other—just a simple touch or a crossed arm can be enough to say “I love You” or “back off” quite effectively.

However, the power of the spoken word is no doubt important, especially on situations when one hopes to make a certain point. Of course it can be hard to achieve without saying anything because the other person may miss out a lot of significant information and instead of straightening things out, the situation can go from bad to worse.

Issues that can affect the relationship need to be dealt with immediately, and couples must know how to speak out. Sure, it’s not always easy to say things that can be potentially hurtful to a partner, but often it’s all a matter of expressing things in a respectful way. Making a relationship work requires great effort from each person: this includes clear communication, which can be achieved by sharing your deepest thoughts and feelings about things.

Some couples think that being compatible means having the same opinions and beliefs, but there are quite a lot who create a harmonious relationship even with contradictory views on a lot of things. The key here is to know what makes each other tick, so that there can be a deeper understanding that can strengthen the bond that holds a couple together.

Talking openly is at times easier said than done. A lot of barriers can prevent a person from saying things that he/she wants to say. One example is the fear of a bad response—sometimes people would rather clam up than bring up something which could provoke a partner. While this may seem to keep the relationship peaceful, it actually causes resentments to fester, which can create major conflicts later on.

Another example is choosing the wrong time to talk. Everyone knows that men and women have different ways of dealing with problems and situations. When a man broods over a particular problem, it doesn’t mean that he is keeping it to himself. This is where conflicts often arise, because women deal with an issue by discussing things, even when their partner would rather be left alone at the moment.

Couples must be able to have mutual respect for each other’s differences in order to come up with a positive outcome together.
