The Absolute First Date No-no's

Tags: , ,

2008-05-09Every first date is always an exciting experience. We read a lot of tips on what to do, what to wear, what to bring. It is all about creating the right impression, and that impression better be good. Making this impression is important, but making these mistakes is absolutely a no-no.

Here are the list-toppers of what not to do on a first date: Don’t be late. Showing up late is a major turn-off—it is a blatant sign of disrespect to the other person. The other person made an obvious effort to arrive on time, only to be kept waiting. “Fashionably late” is what some people call it, although there is nothing fashionable about wasting other people’s time.

Unless you have a valid reason, of course (this doesn’t include your dog chewing your wallet). Never show up like you just jumped out of the bed. Proper hygiene and grooming is essential—an expensive pair of designer jeans or a fabulous dress can never take the place of brushing your teeth and combing your hair.

For the ladies, a simple dress with the right accessories always works out fine. Perfumes and colognes are best used sparingly, lest both of you won’t have the pleasure of smelling the delicious aroma of your expensive dinner. When it comes to hair, money isn’t everything, as what we often see with Mary-Kate Olsen’s locks.

Taking a shower and combing your hair would do the trick. Men have an easier time in this area—just be sure that you nose hair doesn’t spill out of your nostrils; it can be really distracting, sometimes gross. Getting to know each other – that’s what this is all about. It’s not just about you, your job or your car.

Talk about yourself, but don’t forget to ask your date questions. How else can you get to know the person on the opposite side of the table if you’re the only one who does the talking? You’ll be better off with a mirror if you can’t resist talking about you, you, and you.

Picking up your lady on a limo is pimp, but there is also such thing as keeping things simple. Sure, you want to impress her, but some people get spooked by someone who’s trying too hard to impress. What makes a first date a success is not the orchestra or the grand ballroom you rented for the night—it’s the chemistry between you and the other person.

A first date can be nerve-racking, so a few drinks are a good way to lighten up the conversation. But remember to sip, not gulp. Having a drunken date is never fun. You might as well stop hoping that she’ll return your calls after spending the night vomiting in the bathroom.

Resist the urge to ogle at the girl’s bountiful chest on the next table. How would you feel if you saw your date checking out the guy behind you? Keep your eyes where it should be—on your date. Make your questions light and not too intense. Personal questions are better left unasked; it could only make your date uncomfortable.

Asking her if she ever had a sexually transmitted disease is not a very intelligent move on your part. It’s just as bad as letting the conversation die. You both have past relationships and the conversation may veer in that direction at some point, but, talking endlessly about your ex should be avoided.

The date is about you and the person in front of you—put the past behind and move on. Confidence is vital if you want to create an attractive impression. Showing the other person a good time is easy if you believe in yourself and your abilities. Just relax and enjoy!
