A polygamous marriage does exist. It’s everywhere. Believe or not, polygamous marriages are present. In the U.S., several communities in certain States has several wives living under one roof, in Britain the government found out over a thousand men has more than one family, in Muslim countries, it is practiced and in Africa, it’s a culture.
What exactly is a polygamous marriage? This is where a husband marries several wives, with consent, and they all live under one roof! A polygamous marriage is practiced even before the time of Christ. The Old Testament tells us the story. King Solomon has about seven hundred wives and three hundred concubines.

Now that is a lot! Makes you wonder how he can keep up with all of them. King David has several of his own wives and concubines, too. The only no-no in the Bible about polygamous marriages is taking the sister of your wife as a rival wife. Now, that makes sense.
In the Quran, it is tolerated. It is said in the Quran “If you fear that you shall not be able to deal justly with the orphans, marry women of your choice, two or three or four; but if you fear that you shall not be able to deal justly with them, then only one” In other words, as long as you can afford it, meaning be able to provide all their needs, and is voluntary, then your “god” will allow it.
In Africa, even the first wife asks the husband to have a second wife to have help in the house and rearing the kids. Polygamous marriage is such a taboo. They say it is barbaric act and exploitation of women. It’s ironic because prostitution- where women is treated as an object- sex object, a “piece of meat” is barbaric and also an exploitation of women, but is not even considered as a taboo and is paradoxically legalized.
Human beings, they are so confusing. Why is there polygamous marriages in the first place? Is it because it was practiced by the great kings in the bible? Or is it because of the male and female ratio. Everywhere, you go women outnumber men. Is this a valid reason? Why do some people tolerate polygamous marriages and why the majority treat it as immoral? Is it because we are made to believe that Homo sapiens are monogamous creatures even if they are not? What if we were made to believe that, human beings are not monogamous by nature? Surely, it will change the way we see and live life.
Or maybe we should ask - why is polygamy “immoral” in the first place? Is it because the female species are inherently jealous and possessive, while the male species believes in the creed “more is better and merrier?” In other words, polygamous marriage is immoral because society says it is immoral.
Immoral is a very strong word- since immoral are in the category of murder and child abuse. There is no judgment call here unless there is coercion, violation and it involves forcing minor girls in to a polygamous marriage. For men out there, forget about getting into the sanctity of marriage if you can’t fulfill your marriage vows of monogamy- if you don’t want to face with a case of bigamy and child support.
But if you want to practice polygamous marriage, better start working your ass off because it doesn’t come cheap at all. Do whatever you want to do as long as you long as you know the consequences of your actions and willing to stand up to it then good luck.
